4 Newton Road Upgrade

The redevelopment of the existing building at 4 Newton Road for Universal Property Ltd is at a notable corner site at the junction of Newton Road, Karangahape Road and Ponsonby Road.  The project commenced in 2012 with a major remix and refurbishment of all five levels; further stages in 2019 and 2021 have continued to upgrade both the interior and exterior of the building.

The $0.5 million refurbishment in 2012 added a car showroom with a new two and half storey structural glazed shopfront surrounded in crisp, white ACM panels to the frontage along Newton Road. The concrete floors were polished and contrasted with the soft, warm timber tones of the feature kitchenette, central wall paneling and reception furniture. Above the main entrance, directly on the corner, new vertical feature screens were installed.

On the second floor, a new office fit out was designed and installed for the building owner, including a staff kitchen that doubled as an entertainment space with built in booth seating and large island bench. The textured rubber flooring referenced the car showroom arm of the client’s portfolio. Simple, clean office partitions completed the fit-out.

In 2019 the car showroom was revamped to be a large office space and the small retail unit on the Abbey Road frontage refurbished into a new fitness/ personal trainer facility. The atrium floor void in the car showroom was infilled to create a separate tenancy at the lower ground level.

In 2021 the exterior of the building was upgraded with new vertical metal cladding, prefinished in black, to give it a contemporary appearance. The feature screen on the corner was retained and is a crisp feature in white against the new black rainscreen. The over cladding cost was approximately $85,000.
